Golf Course: Broomfields premier daily fee golf course, which opened in the summer of 1999. Golf course architect Rick Phelps of Evergreen, CO-based Richard M. Phelps, LTD, and designed Broadlands to appeal to golfers of all skill levels. This 117 acre, par-72 layout plays 7303 yards from the tips and 5350 yards from the forward tee boxes. The course features generous fairways (40 to 60 yards wide on most holes), lush turf conditions and numerous interesting water hazards. Phelps notes that while the fairways are wide, the course has strategic, but subtle design features that require the better player to position their ball into much smaller areas in order to score well. As examples, certain hazards are only visible from a specific portion of a fairway; greens receive shots from specific areas and reject shots from others; and fairways are sometimes sloped to reward a long carry over a hazard. Phelps says that few of these features are boldly apparent from the tee. He wanted the golfer to have to discover the strategy that best suites their game. Broadlands design is intentionally subtle to provide an advantage to the golfer who makes the effort to study the course, commented Phelps. In head to head competition, the golfer who understands this course well should be able to gain a significant advantage over the player who just rips it down the middle. Most all greens at the Broadlands are large. A pin placement sheet on every cart tells you in what sector of the green the holes are cut daily. This is important, because Phelps patterned the greens after the courses name. As stated above, the greens hold the better shots, but because they are so big, even if youre on the green it doesnt guarantee anything scorewise. The fairways, too, are expansive. Players are encouraged to take chances off the tee box because most fairways can handle draws or fades. Should you stray from the fairways (and you will), you will pay the price of a stroke (or two) because the native areas are treacherous. Bad lies are common in the native if you can even find your ball. Other course features include 70 fairway and greenside sand bunkers, nine lakes and a man-made creek. Water comes into play on 11 of 18 holes. The peninsula green on the second hole is guarded by water on three sides, and there are waterfalls between the 9th and 18th holes. The turf at Broadlands is bent grass greens and perennial rye grass on the fairways and tees. Signature Hole: No. 15, a 609-yard par-5 wrapped around a lake and native area. A nice little forest hides this holes tee box, and players can bite off as much of the lake as they want. There are several bunkers to catch wayward tee shots, and the smallest green on the course is well guarded in front by a large deep-faced bunker. This scenic hole is reachable in two but was designed to be a three-shot par-5. Amenities: Other amenities at the Broadlands include a 5,000 square foot clubhouse offering a well-stocked pro shop and full food and beverage service. A banquet meeting room is available for up to 200 people for private and social gatherings and group events. The course also offers a premium practice facility with a driving range, practice putting and chipping greens and practice bunkers. Group and individual lessons are available from the PGA pro shop staff. Architect: Rick Phelps of Evergreen, CO-based Richard M. Phelps, Ltd. Facility Facts: 5,000 square foot clubhouse.
