Southern Hills was established in October of 1997 by the Dunaway family of Hawkinsville. The 441 acres of hunting and farm land was exceptionally well suited for a golf course with rolling terrain and elevation changes of 131 ft. The course took 1 1/2 years to build under the design and shaping of Ernest Jones. Together with the real estate development, it is the largest venture in the history of Pulaski County. The course has received great recognition in the Central Georgia region as well as state wide. It was selected among the "Top 25 New Courses in the United States in 1998". It has also been a host to events for the Georgia PGA, the Georgia State Golf Association, and the site of the 2000 NGA Tour Michelob Light Classic.
